First thought: “Oh my, that disease actually exists?” Granted, I thought it was pretty likely it would, but I first heard of that in a Saddle Club book….lucky you knew about it.

We see this in the South pretty frequently. However, I expect it is a good deal rarer in your part of the world. Very astute of you and a very good thing for the patient, because RMSF is potentially fatal.

Great catch! I have never seen a case, but then again–and contrary to what one would expect–we don’t have much Rocky Mountain spotted fever in Colorado where I live.

The medical mystery published on 2/22 was very interesting. However, the definitions provided there for sensitivity and specificity were incorrectly reversed. Sensitivity = true positives/(true positive + false negative). Specificity=true negatives/(true negative + false positives).
