Saw a 15-year-old boy today, accompanied by his father. Medical issue dealt with, general conversation ensued. As part of whatever it was we were talking about, the father stated that he did not plan to die. As in, he refuses to cease to exist. Okay.
This brought to mind a friend of mine, who refuses to celebrate birthdays. Why bother, all it means is that you’re another year closer to being dead. Okay. Given that he feels this way, when his wife threw him a surprise party, I obliged his views by gifting him with an urn. (He loved it.)
By way of telling the story, though, my exact words were, “Guess what I got him?”
Patient’s father: A coffin?
My response to the coffin remark: “The shape would give it away.”
The kid’s answer to that: “That’s why you put it in a box.”
