Things You Never Want to Hear from an IT Guy

While installing new equipment in the office:

  1. I have no idea how to do that.
  2. Let me call my Help Desk.
  3. [nervous laughter]
  4. I’m thinking.

  1. Its not a bug, its a feature

  2. Heh. I still laugh at an incident that had points 1 and 2, though I did not realise it untiil the installer started yelling. Seems he was installing a type of equipment that was so new he may well have been the first field rep to encounter it. Following the instructions, did fine until coming across a section sayng “now connect wire X” without saying what to connect it to. His internal help-desk apparently started off by saying there was no such wire, then that it did not need to be connected to anything, then that it was obvious where it was to be connected – at which point the yelling got loud enough for me, about twelve feet away, to hear…

  3. On the other hand, the alternative to “I’m thinking” is blindly going clicky click on Winders, or force fitting tab A into slot C (instead of B).

I’d rather have someone say that they have no idea on how to do something, and have to call their help desk than try to BS me. I’ve been BS’ing people for 30 years in the IT industry and can recognize it when I see it.

  4. That’s a coincidence: all those things are also on my list of things I never want to hear from my doctor.

  5. For a minute, I thought that said, “IT Goy.”

    I giggled.
